Kitchen Safety

Kitchen Safety

We don't think much about safety in the kitchen as we go about cooking, warming and washing dishes, but how often do accidents happen; accidents that could have been prevented. I've put together a number of things that would create a safer environment in the kitchen for you and your family. If you have any suggestions or comments please feel free to write me at: Cajun Cookery@gmail.com. Thank you.

    Fire

Fire in the kitchen should be of the utmost concern to the homemaker, yet how many households
have fire extinguishers in the kitchen? Purchase a small one pound fire extinguisher for grease
fires and install it in a convenient location that is easily accessible. Not over the stove!

If you have a fire on the stove and don't have a fire extinguisher, DO NOT try to put it out with
water! Use baking soda, sand or smother it with a towel. Water will only spread the fire.

Keep the burners of your stove clean. Built up grease, dried, hard grease will catch on fire. After
every cooking session use a soapy rag and clean around the burners and stove top. It's easier to
keep it safe if you keep it clean. At least once a month give your kitchen a thorough cleaning
    including the stove.

When washing pots and pans, especially if you use one a lot, wash the bottom of the pot thoroughly.
Grease build up may not seem to be critical but the dried grease on a pan bottom can catch on fire.

    Cooking

Never leave a stove inattended. You never know when something will happen and you'll have a
preventable accident. Always turn a burner off the minute you remove the pot.

Always point the handles of pots and pans away from the front of the stove. They are easy for
children to reach or get hit causing a scald or burn. Point them at 90 degrees of the stove front.
